Cardiff represents a problem of indoor and outdoor, coverage and capacity.  All different cellular challenges. Initially the Cardiff city centre segment of the WORD project is driven by the indoor use-case in the Cardiff market hall,  an old Victorian market hall.

The connectivity WORD provides however will become invaluable to allow a continuity of trade as the venue is going to be refurbished at the end of 2024 and into 2025. A number of the market traders will be taken to temporary accommodation outside on the street.

Capacity is challenged by the busy Christmas and summer markets, no more so than when the Principality stadium empties out and everyone comes to the market hall, there’s no capacity for their electronic point of sale systems. The benefit of a dedicated 5G network will be that they can carry on trading even in the pop-up environment.
